Wellness Wednesday

Sleep. It’s up there with rank of importance with our nutrition, rest and recovery, and it has a HUGE effect on our performance and overall wellness. It’s a puzzle piece in taking care of our mental, physical and emotional health, thus we NEED proper sleep in order to perform and survive in our everyday lives and at the box. I know some of you know how it feels coming in in the early AM classes after only 4-6 hours of sleep…it’s not fun. While we sleep, our mind and body are working together to help muscles repair and grow, to regulate stress hormones (which help us fall asleep and controls our mood) and to detox and replenish our bodies. If you’re fatigued throughout the day, notice a change in your performance when it comes to your scores/strength/ability to make it through long WODs, are irritable, your appetite is off or you’re getting injured more than usual, your sleep may be the underlying culprit. It’s been said the getting 6-8 hours of sleep a night is ideal (please note you can never “make up/get back” lost sleep), and as Coach Calvin has said in the past “the more, the better.” While you sleep, you’re giving your mind and body time to reset, letting your muscles repair and grow and getting yourself ready for the next day ahead of you (the old adage of “tomorrow’s a new day” holds true with your sleeping habits…they can change the course of your entire next day or rest of the week). There’s a lot more science behind the sleep and performance connection, so if you’re interested in further info check out a blog post from this past summer on Pure Pharma’s website HERE. Their blog has great content on supplementation, nutrition, performance, wellness, recipes, etc and is worth the occasional browsing.
