“Both tears and sweat are salty, but they render a different result. Tears will get you sympathy; sweat will get you change.”
-Jesse Jackson, Civil Rights Activist and Minister
As athletes, we have all felt the salty sting of sweat in our eyes, however, this feeling is sweet because we know we pushed ourselves beyond our limits, whether we won or lost. Tears can sting just as bad, but the feeling they inflict is different, it’s a bitterness, a regretfulness because we gave in to our negative thinking, the voice inside our head telling us “we can’t.” Given the choice of facing salt in the eye, I would much rather know that the sting I’m feeling is due to my perseverance to say “I can” than my willingness to say “I can’t.”
